When is the Best Time to Take High School Senior Portraits?

Jul 20, 2026

A question I often hear from parents is “When should we schedule senior pictures?” The answer depends on the look you’re hoping to achieve, but one thing is always true: earlier is better.

As a photographer, I encourage most seniors to book the summer before their senior year. or in the early fall. Here’s why.

Summer: Golden Light and Flexible Schedules

Late June through August is one of my favorite times for sessions. The days are long. the evenings are filled with beautiful golden light, and students don’t have to worry about homework, sports, or school schedules.

Summer also gives us plenty of flexibility if we have to reschedule because of weather. Plus, you’ll have your images ready well before yearbook deadlines.

Early Fall: Nature’s Best Backdrop

September and October are incredibly popular for senior portraits – and for good reason. Cooler temperatures, colorful leaves, and soft evening light create timeless, vibrant images.

If you love the classic autumn look, it’s important to reserve your session early. Fall dates tend to fill up fast.

Spring isn’t too late- But It Has Challenges

While spring can still produce beautiful portraits, it often comes with tighter schedules. Seniors are busy with prom, graduation activities, sports, and preparing for college or their next adventure.

Why Booking Early Matters

I often book sessions several months in advance, especially during peak senior portrait season. Reserving early gives you

  • The widest selection of available dates
  • Time to plan outfits and location
  • Flexibility if weather forces us to reschedule
  • Plenty of time to receive and order prints, graduation announcements, and gifts
  • Confidence that your images will ready early before school deadlines.

My Recommendation

If you’re looking for the best combination of beautiful light, comfortable weather, and stress-free planning, schedule your session between July and October.

Every senior has a unique personality, and your portrait session should reflect who you are at this exciting milestone. By planning ahead, we can create images you’ll be proud of for years to come.

Ready to celebrate your senior year? Reach out early to secure your ideal date before the calendar fills up!
